Understanding Adaptive Quota

How Atlas AVD's Adaptive Quota shows Azure vCPU demand by region and VM family, flags at-risk quotas, and submits quota-increase requests to Azure.

Before you begin

  • The Adaptive Quota view permission, included in most built-in roles (Administrator, Operator, Security Officer, Auditor, Helpdesk, Reports Viewer, and Read Only)
  • Viewing demand and available quota, and submitting quota-increase requests, are included on Atlas AVD; submitting a request also needs an Administrator
  • For requests to reach Azure, the Atlas app registration needs the Quota Request Operator role on the subscription

Opening Adaptive Quota

In the sidebar, open Atlas Operations → Compass and select Adaptive Quota. The page has four tabs: Overview (the default), Current Demand, Browse Available, and Request History. The Request Quota Increase button in the header targets your most utilized quota; its menu lets you choose a different one.

Reading the summary cards and Quota Health

The top of the Current Demand tab shows Total vCores (with overall utilization), Total VMs, At-Risk Quotas, and the Most Constrained Region; click a card to drill into the details. Because Azure grants quota per region and VM family, Atlas counts each region-plus-family combination once rather than once per VM size.

Below the cards, Quota Health sorts every region-and-family combination into Healthy, Watch, At Risk, and Exhausted, and Needs attention lists the ones closest to their limit with a Request increase shortcut. The Overview tab shows Host Pools, vCPU in Use, SKU Fallbacks, and Deploy Success, and charts vCPU demand and VM-size selection activity over the last 24 hours, per host pool.

Current Demand and Browse Available

The Current Demand table lists your usage by VM size and family in each region, with used, limit, headroom, price per vCore-hour, and a risk level (Low below 60%, Medium from 60%, High from 80% by default). Filter by region, family, or risk level, tick Constrained only, or search. Browse Available lets you pick a region and see the quota you could still use there, with AVD recommended only turned on by default. The active tab and selected region are kept in the page address, so you can share a link to a view.

Browse Available shows nothing until you pick a region.

Requesting a quota increase

Open a Current Demand row's actions menu and choose Request Quota Increase, or use Submit Increase Request on a Browse Available row. Atlas pre-fills a suggested new limit based on your VMs and cores plus a 25% buffer; you can change it (it must be higher than the current limit) and add an optional justification before submitting. The request is filed with Azure straight away.

Atlas warns you if a request for the same family, region, and subscription is already pending, so you don't submit duplicates.

Tracking requests and other actions

While Azure processes a request, the matching Current Demand row shows a Pending badge with the limit you asked for. If Azure denies a request, adjust the VM size, region, or justification before submitting again. The same actions menu also offers View VMs, Shift Workload (regions with spare quota for that family), Monitor Usage Trends (with a forecast of when the quota runs out), and Copy Details.
