Question 1

What is Hydra used for in Azure Virtual Desktop?

Accepted Answer

Hydra, now part of Login VSI, is a management platform for Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365. It runs in your own Azure subscription and covers host pool deployment, autoscaling, image capture, scripting, user session management, and reporting from a web portal.

Question 2

Can Atlas AVD replace Hydra for AVD management?

Accepted Answer

For AVD in Azure, yes: Atlas AVD covers deployment, autoscaling, imaging, scripting, session management, monitoring, and multi-tenant operations. If you also manage Azure Local or on-premises Hyper-V hosts from Hydra, Atlas AVD does not cover those today.

Question 3

Does Hydra support GCC High?

Accepted Answer

Hydra's public documentation does not include a support statement for Azure Government or GCC High. Atlas AVD runs in Azure Commercial today; Microsoft 365 GCC and GCC High support are coming soon, and you can join the waitlist for your cloud to be set up the moment it opens.

Question 4

How do Atlas AVD and Hydra handle image updates?

Accepted Answer

Both capture golden images to Azure Compute Gallery and replace session hosts with the new version. Atlas AVD adds staged rollout rings that check health between stages and roll back automatically if the new image causes problems.

Question 5

Is Hydra suitable for MSPs managing multiple AVD tenants?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Hydra manages many tenants from a single instance. Atlas AVD is also multi-tenant, with one flat price per tenant that does not scale with user count, and its optional MSP Capabilities upgrade adds Atlas Command and white-label branding.

Question 6

How does pricing compare?

Accepted Answer

Hydra is licensed per concurrent user through the Azure Marketplace, with a free community edition for small environments. Atlas AVD uses flat plan pricing that does not change as you add users. See the Atlas pricing page for plan details.
